Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor

Job Description

Organization The NASA Exchange JSC (Starport) is the morale and welfare organization for NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Starport offers wellness, fitness, recreation, retail, and food services for the employees and Johnson Space Center community.

Description Starport is currently seeking highly skilled, energetic, and knowledgeable certified Personal Trainers to join our expanding team of fitness professionals at the NASA Exchange JSC. Ideal candidate must have a positive attitude, a passion for fitness & learning, be available for full-time training (mornings &/or evenings) We're willing to train the right individual!

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality customer service to all current and potential clients, regardless of fitness level, appearance, or otherwise
  • Provide one-on-one or small group fitness coaching
  • Develop and implement innovative exercise programs
  • Explain and demonstrate modern exercise principles to ensure client safety
  • Proactive communication with members about programs and packages
  • Communicate effectively with the supervisor through phone, email, or in person
  • Follow and enforce all safety regulations, policies and procedures
  • Attend all Personal Training and department staff meetings
  • Carry out all responsibilities in an honest, ethical and professional manner
  • Other duties as assigned.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Ability to positively motivate members in fitness activities
  • Possess a current Personal Training Certification through NSCA, ACSM, ACE, NASM or other nationally-recognized certifying agency
  • Possess current, nationally recognized CPR/AED and First Aid certifications
  • Bachelor's degree in kinesiology, exercise science, or a similar health field
  • Ability to modify exercises and tailor workouts to meet specific needs of the client
  • Ability to interact effectively at all levels and across diverse cultures
  • Excellent organizational, and written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and thrive in an environment that values high expectations, accountability, and balanced lifestyles.

Position Title: Facility Specialist

Reports To: Facility Manager

 

Overview:

Starport NASA Exchange-JSC (aka Starport) is seeking a highly motivated and energetic individual to serve as a Facility Specialist at the NASA Exchange – JSC (aka ‘Starport’) at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) reporting to the Facility Manager. This is a full-time position of 40 hours a week including a minimum of one weekend rotation per month and some nights depending on scheduled events. This is a non-exempt position and is eligible for overtime with advance approval.

Starport’s mission is to empower lives and promote the overall well-being of the JSC Team. Starport Services is a quality-of-life program that directly supports the mission of the Johnson Space Center by providing a welcoming experience, modern and flexible amenities, and inclusive services to engage, enrich, and energize the JSC Team. Included are fitness and recreational services, wellness programs, food and vending services, retail operations, employee activities and convenience services. These activities and services enhance work life, promote mental and physical fitness, and generally provide a working environment at JSC that helps to attract and retain quality employees.

Starport is a non-appropriated funded program and is financially self-sustaining with minimal outside support. The Facility Specialist provides the physical labor required to efficiently maintain athletic playing fields, conference facility, fitness center, cafeteria and adjacent areas in a safe manner. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Understanding and following daily work instructions according to the assigned work schedule of supervisor, and applying sound judgment to operate equipment safely, as well as to prevent problems.
  • Applying knowledge of standardized and accepted facilities maintenance procedures and techniques in the athletic, fitness, recreation, conference facility and food service industry in accordance with company approved safety practices and policies.
  • Maintaining assigned fields, grounds and exterior of property in an attractive and safe condition to maximize curb appeal and safety requirements.
  • Following established safety and sanitation procedures to ensure safety.
  • Conducting general room setup and breakdown responsibilities for conference planning, recreation, and fitness programming support.
  • Picking up and disposing of any litter on or around the assigned athletic playing fields or other outdoor responsible grounds as deemed necessary.
  • Utilizing safety equipment and related work articles in a proper manner while performing various assigned tasks.
  • Maintaining tools and equipment in proper working condition by performing minor maintenance as needed.
  • Communicating all pertinent job related information, including discrepancies, to supervisor on a daily basis.
  • Performing other related maintenance work as needed, such as mowing, edging, marking playing fields, replacing volleyball/soccer nets, removing standing water off playing fields, etc.
  • Reporting any job site problems or concerns to supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Performing and recording weekly checks on various related indoor and outdoor sports facilities and areas for the purpose of maintaining safe participant and spectator conditions.
  • Adhering to all company policies and procedures paying special attention to health and/or safety procedures.
  • Reporting all occupational injuries or illnesses to supervisor immediately.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work environment at all times
  • Demonstrating a positive attitude through courtesy, service, cooperation, hospitality, sensitivity, and professionalism to all customers and team members.
  • Assisting in supplemental maintenance and custodial responsibilities as needed.
  • Attending scheduled meetings and training.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or GED
  • A minimum of one (1) experience of general maintenance and/or athletic field maintenance preferred

Skills & Requirements:

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to deliver a safe environment of secure assigned areas and identify potential hazards
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Dexterity Skills
  • Ability to read and write in English
  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to regularly lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, squat, climb, crawl, push, pull, stand or walk or perform other physical activities for extended periods of time
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Ability work in normal seasonal weather conditions while performing outdoor task

Certifications:

  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification (preferred)
  • Must be able to obtain within 30 days of employment with Starport assistance
  • HASC (Houston Area Safety Council) Basic Plus Certification
  • HASC (Houston Area Safety Council) JSC Site Specific Certification
  • JSC Food Handlers Physical

Position Title: Dietitian

Reports To: Wellness & Fitness Manager

Status: Per Diem Contract

 

Overview:

The Registered Dietitian is an integral part of Starport’s Wellness team. This role is responsible for providing nutritional support to the NASA – Johnson Space Center Team members and community participating in Starport’s wellness services/programs. This position will communicate directly with clients to help them improve their health through nutritional counselling. The individual will also consult with the Wellness & Fitness Manager to deliver group education sessions for our JSC population.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure quality, personalized nutritional education for Starport clients via digital interactions.
  • Provide scientifically based nutritional educational sessions via digital and/or in person classroom settings
  • Maintain compliance with all requirements of Federal, State, and local regulations and guidelines pertaining to dietetics and the USDA
  • Maintain all records and reports necessary to comply with Starport’s information protection policy
  • Support diet restrictions and physician orders by developing menus supporting dietary care plans
  • Provides nutritional counseling for a variety of food allergies and sensitivities
  • Drive customer satisfaction, and maintain client relationships through professionalism
  • Conduct evaluations and investigate program concerns while providing recommendations to improve service and quality
  • Support all Starport services and promotional standards improving participation, employee morale and promoting healthy eating habits across JSC
  • Present to various partners through meetings, formal presentation and or nutrition education
  • Additional tasks and responsibilities may be assigned at the discretion of the Wellness & Fitness Manager. Tasks and responsibilities may be added or revised based on the volume of business and the need for the work to be completed at the present time

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Degree in Dietetics
  • Registered/Licensed Dietitian
  • Must submit to a U.S. Government full criminal background check

Position Title: Summer Camp Director

Reports To: Sport & Recreation Manager

Status: Full-time - Temporary

 

Overview:

Starport is looking for highly-motivated, active, and creative individuals who have the desire to work with children and enrich their lives in the NASA Starport youth programing through planning and implementing activities, games, and crafts while also serving as the primary adult responsible for the supervision of contract staff and campers. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the program manager in implementing the summer camp program 
  • Supervises summer camp contractors
  • Assists program manager in maintaining order of the summer camp program
  • Supervise youth ages 6-12 who have been assigned to counselors groups
  • Assists in enforcement of the rules and regulations of the summer camp program
  • Accepts complaints and grievances from parents and camp counselors, takes appropriate action and reports information to the program manager
  • Plan fun, yet safe activities for camp counselors group to participate in on a daily basis
  • Ensure that each child is receiving a quality camp experience
  • Participate enthusiastically in all activities
  • Serve as a positive role model for youth
  • Substitute as needed for absence of contract staff
  • Tour and recruit perspective families looking to enroll children in summer camp
